Madonna Okinawa.
Scale 1:8.
Height with the stand 23,5cm.
Lost wax casting. Patination.
This sculpture is inspired by a Yoshitoshi drawing in which a woman
is fending off two bandits that intruded her house.
In European as well as Russian iconographic tradition, such
inclination of head and expression of peacefulness are
characteristic for depicting the Madonna. In addition, woman's
facial expression contrasts with the overall story and the
expressiveness of the posture of the samurai woman.
The woman’s dress has some symbols on it, the coat of arms of her
clan. This sign is called Tomoemon. More than 350 clans in Japan
included this sign in their symbols. During the reign of Ryukyu at
the territory of the modern Okinawa, Tomoemon even appeared on the
national flag.
